Former Goa Congress President Shantaram Naik Died on Heart Attack, Funeral Updates:
Former Goa Congress President and former Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik passed away this morning following a heart attack.
Goa Pradesh Congress General Secretary Altinho Gomes said that 72-year-old Naik was taken from his residence in Madgaon to a private hospital after he complained of uneasiness, where he was pronounced dead. He told that at seven in the morning he breathed his last.
Congress leader Girish Rai Chodankar said, “It is astonishing news for us. In their form we have lost a guide. He had encouraged young people to join Congress in a large number of them. This is a huge loss for us.
Naik, considered to be a Congress loyalist, was elected to the Lok Sabha in the 1984 general elections. He also demanded that Goa be given full state status which was completed in 1987. He represented Goa twice in the Rajya Sabha. He was elected twice for the Rajya Sabha from 2005 to 2011 and from 2011 to 2017.
In the Rajya Sabha elections held in 2017, he lost to Vinay Tendulkar of BJP. In his family there is a son apart from his wife.
